Lawson State Hosts Woodlawn High School Business and Finance Academy
Students from
Woodlawn High School Business and Finance Academy recently visited Lawson State Community College for a day-long, work-based learning
event. The workshop, held on the Birmingham campus, was designed to teach everything
from how to apply for scholarships to how to prepare for a job interview.
More than 50 high school scholars took part in mock interviews with industry partners
and advisory board members. They also heard from guest speakers including representatives
from The
Birmingham Promise and the Lawson State admissions team.
"What an awesome program and wonderful opportunity afforded to Lawson State Community
College to host so many career-focused high school scholars. We look forward to some
of these business leaders in the making becoming Lawson State students soon," said
Joe Hollins. Mr. Hollins, an enrollment specialist at Lawson State, also shared information
about
business studies at the college.
Woodlawn High School Academy of Business and Finance, one of several learning academies
within the Birmingham Public Schools, is considered a great starting point for students
who want to become entrepreneurs, corporate executives and managers. The curriculum
is intended to prepare students for successful careers in business.
"As it relates to the Business and Finance Academy there is nothing to lose but everything
to gain. "We are focused on college and/or career readiness," said Tamisha Jackson,
WHS Business and Finance Academy coordinator. "If students do not wish to attend the
college, we do encourage them to go to some type of trade program, she said. "We want
to make sure that our kids are more marketable once they graduate."
