Veterans Suicide Awareness
Students, faculty and staff of Lawson State Community College joined together to reflect
on the 147 veterans who lost their lives to suicide in 2022. This was done as a part
of the Alabama Department of Veterans Affairs campaign, that takes place statewide
during the month of September, which is National Suicide Prevention Awareness month.
To remember the veterans, 147 American Flags were placed on the front lawns of the
Birmingham and Bessemer Campuses of Lawson State.
Several speakers shared the significance of what was being done and why it is so important
to take care of ones mental health. Operation We Remember, is a powerful visual reminder
of those who lost their lives to suicide, and the work that is greatly needed to prevent
more deaths in the future.
If you are a Veteran or know one in need of someone to talk to dial 988 and press
number 1 to be connected to the Veterans Crisis Line.
