Rep. Patrick Sellers Emphasizes Importance of Elections During Lawson State Visit
While much of the nation is focused on the presidential election, voters should be
equally concerned about local and state representation, too, Alabama Rep. Patrick Sellers (D-Birmingham) recently shared during a visit to Lawson State Community College.
"Our local and state elections are so important," Rep. Sellers told a group of adult
learners who eagerly asked questions about the roles of government and the importance
of voting at every level. "For example, take probate judges. It's an elected role
that most of us don't have to deal with until someone dies, and then you have to manage
everything that comes with that. From executing probate matters to clean streets,
safe communities, and even potholes, local elections affect many of the important
things in our lives."
The legislator's visit was part of an ongoing speaker's forum hosted by the Adult Education Department. The series, facilitated by Lawson State Career Coach Ricky Lee, kicked off earlier this year when the college hosted leader Danny Carr, the first Black district attorney for Jefferson County.
While on campus, Rep. Sellers also praised the school for having discussion forums
for adult learners and reinforced the critical need for all eligible voters to participate
in the November 2024 election. This has the potential to resonate throughout history,
he said, adding that it marks a chance for broader representation for everybody, "not
just the 1 percent."
