Child Development

Lawson's AAS (Associate and Applied Science Degree) in Child Development falls under the Social and Behavorial Sciences Department. Child Development is the study of the biological, psychological and emotional changes that occur from birth through adolescence. Childhood is divided into three distinct and important stages of life which include early childhood, middle childhood, and late childhood (preadolescence). Lawson State's AAS degree program will equip you to enter the workforce working in an Early Childhood Development Center or creating your own center. If you are interested in teaching at the elementary level, pursue your two-year degree in Early Childhood Education which is a different major. Child Development is a similar but different career path altogether.

Benefits of Choosing a Career in the Child Development

One of the best advantages of securing your AAS in Child Development is that you will be able to enter the workforce as a qualified Child Development specialist after receiving your degree.  Lawson State also offers a certificate in this field as well.  Many Child Development specialist work in day care centers, Kinder Kares, or create their own centers.  The degree does qualify you for entry level employment in this career.  Earnings are around $27K, but if you continue your education, you can enjoy salaries in the 60K range which is the national average for Kindergarten and Elementary school teachers.

Our Associate of Arts (AAS) two-year degree is 76 credits.  To  increase your earning power, many Child Development students continue their education.  Although not a transfer degree (per se) some General Education classes do transfer and can be credited towards a 4-year degree in Early Childhood Education.  Some Child Development majors eventually secure their bachelor's degrees in Education and teach.

All social and behavioral AA and AS degrees are back and protected by Alabama Transfers (Learn More).

Explore Your Options in Child Development

Students graduating from Lawson's Child Development program are awarded with Associate in Applied Science 2-year degree.  This is a non-transferable degree; however, any General Education classes (that are apart of this degree) can  transfer.

As previously noted, Child Development is a 2-year AAS degree designed for individuals who are trying to enter the workforce early.

If you are interested in a Transfer degee and would like to become a K-12 educator (and work for a local school district) you would select a different degree altogether, NOT Child Development  To do so, you would complete your first 2 years at Lawson and then transfer your credits to a 4-year college and complete your Bachelor's degree, get your teacher's Certification and teach.  To follow this track, opposed to the Child Development track, follow one of the transfer degrees paths below.

  • Early Childhood Education (Transferable 2-year degree)
  • Elementary Education (Transferable 2-year degree)
  • Secondary (Middle & High School) Education (Transferable 2-year degree)
