Faculty Advising Responsibilities (SeeTutorials Below):

Advising is a major responsibility of all faculty at Lawson State.  The largest responsibility centers on assisting students with understanding their degree plans and setting up paths to graduation.  All faculty should list their advising hours on their locator cards (which are posted on office doors) and post their hours in Blackboard as well.

Advising Hours per Week

All full-time faculty out of a 40 hour work week (including 1 hour for lunch), should post at least 5 to 7 hours for advising per week.  It is rare that all hours will be scheduled each week, but it is important to make the times available, in case a student is in need of an advising session.  Advising hours and days should be staggered as well to ensure that more students can attend advising sessions.

Advising and the Help Desk

All full-time faculty are expected to assist at the Advising Help Desk which runs the first week of classes every term on both campuses.  Advisors are also expected to assist during the advising period and during pre-registration and registration periods.

View each video below so you will gain a better understanding of the advising and registration process here at Lawson State (from the student's perspective).  These are the training videos we use to assist students in the advising process. Hence, it is important to understand the process (from their perspective), so you can better advise them.  View each, video below except when you get to the degree plan section.

All students should register for classes (online) the semester before classes begin.  Students should never wait until the last minute to register.  Always encourage your advisees to register early.  Registration Tutorials provided for students below (and for you to view) are for information purposes only.

eWithdrawal & Adding and Dropping Courses

Lawson State has an eWithdrawal process for students struggling academically.  Students can withdraw from any course online (without academic penalty).  As a faculty member and advisor, it is important to help students to figure out whether or not they should withdraw from a class.  Students should NEVER use the withdraw process as their first option.  Rather, withdrawing should be used as a last option only.  As an advisor, it is important to help students understand this difference.

Adding and Dropping courses is different.  Students add and drop courses during the scheduling process.  Click on the link below to learn more about the eWithdrawal and Adding/Dropping process at Lawson State.
