Lawson State Hosts Annual Career and Wellness Fair
BESSEMER, AL (March 10, 2011) - Residents and students interested in jobs and health opportunities were able to meet with about three dozen company representatives at yesterday’s annual Career and Wellness Fair hosted by Lawson State Community College. Job seekers were able to fill out some applications on the spot and most health screenings yielded immediate results.
“I am about to graduate and actively looking at this time for a job,” said Tavarus Hartsfield, Lawson State SGA president. “I know that due to economic times, many are searching also. Therefore it’s great to be able discuss employment with so many different companies all in one place.”
Some of the employers in attendance included the Personnel Board of Jefferson County, State Employment Service, Jefferson County Commission Human Resources, Birmingham Coca-Cola, US Army, AIG American General, Baptist Health Centers, the Alabama Career Centers, and Wells Fargo. Other representatives were Crawford Broadcasting, Liberty National, America's First Federal Credit Union, Noland Health Services, Birmingham Jefferson Transit Authority, Birmingham VA Medical Center, US Department of Veterans Affairs, Cornerstone Solutions and Express Oil Change. Representatives from the Birmingham, Homewood and Hueytown Police Departments also provided information on employment.
The event also included health screenings at no cost - blood pressure, diabetes, vision, dental, sickle cell, glucose, cholesterol, dental, and BMI for body fat. Screenings were conducted by Lawson State’s School of Nursing, Lawson State Cosmetology Department, The Public Education Employees Wellness Program, UAB’s Minority Health and Research Center, Jefferson County Public Health Department and Wal-Mart (Visual Screening). Other wellness and health care providers included the American Red Cross (Birmingham Area Chapter), Jefferson County Aids in Minorities, Inc., West Princeton Dental Clinic, March of Dimes, UAB Medical West, Cooper Green-Mercy Hospital, UAB Sarrell Dental and Eye, UAB Vaccine Research Clinic, Rump Shaker, Inc., Town and Country Chiropractic, Sickle Cell Disease Association of America-Central Alabama, and Chi Eta Phi Nursing Sorority.
