BIRMINGHAM, AL - Teacher, administrator
and entrepreneur – are all entries on
a checklist of career plans for Felicia Renee
Howard. She has now come one step closer to
accomplishing those goals after being selected
for the University of Montevallo’s Kermit
Mathison Scholarship by Bradley Byrne, chancellor
of the Alabama Community College System.
Chancellor Byrne received the Kermit Mathison
Outstanding Junior College Administrator Award
which carries a tuition scholarship to be given
to a student of his choice. The scholarship
provides a four-year scholarship renewable up
to four years.
“She has earned this scholarship and is
a good example for others to see what can happen
with hard work and dedication,” Byrne
said. “The sacrifices that she made to
get good grades will pay off over and over.”
Howard, who has a 3.933 grade point average,
will be graduating in May from the early childhood
education program at Lawson State Community
College. She is also preparing to take additional
classes at Lawson over the summer to complete
requirements for an associate degree in mathematics.
Her plans are to teach in secondary education,
more specifically 9th grade algebra.
“This is a great honor and I am very pleased
to have received this scholarship given to me
by Chancellor Byrne,” Howard said. “I
set my earlier goals on going to school, keeping
my grade point average up and hoping that one
day I could receive a scholarship. Even so,
I could not imagine receiving one of this significance.
It’s going to help me reach my goals.”
Focused and determined, Howard chartered her
career path to begin at Lawson State. “Attending
Lawson State,” she said, “I could
stay at home and still get a solid foundation
before transferring to a four-year institution.
My choices then included the University of Montevallo,
Samford, University of Alabama and UAB.”
Felicia is a very deserving student who has
already merited two awards in one. She received
not just a scholarship but the Chancellors Award,”
said Dr. Perry W. Ward, president of Lawson
State Community College. “To do what she
has done with work and education, and to still
maintain a high grade point average is a balancing
act. Whether an educator or entrepreneur, every
indicator reflects that she has a bright future
ahead of her. ”
Howard, who loves children and currently works
in a day care center with four-year olds, intends
to one day soon open her center. “This
is only the beginning for me. I don’t
intend to stop until I get my doctorate,”
she said. “Anything you put your mind
to, you can accomplish.”
