Lawson State Hosts 2011 AlaMATYC Conference
BIRMINGHAM, AL (February 2011) —The 2011 Conference of the Alabama Mathematical Association of Two Year Colleges (AlaMATYC), will be held on Friday, February 18 at Lawson State Community College. AlaMATYC, an affiliate of The American Mathematical Association of Two Year Colleges, is committed to continuous improvement in the instruction of mathematics as well as the promotion of a quality educational experience for students in the first two years of college.
Dr. Herbert H. J. Riedel, mathematician and President of Lurleen B. Wallace Community College, will serve as keynote speaker at the one-day conference. The symposium will be held in the Perry W. Ward Alabama Center for Advanced Technology and Training (ACATT) on the college’s Birmingham West Campus and will provide workshops and seminars to advance teaching and learning in mathematics.
The conference is also sponsored by more than five national vendors including Cengage, Pearson, Thinkwell, Hawkes, and iLearn.
In partnership with Lawson State, the Lawson State STEP-UP in STEM program will serve as co-sponsor of the AlaMATYC State Conference, providing resources and services to assist in the ongoing professional development of STEM professionals. STEP-UP in STEM is provided through the National Science Foundation to enhance the quality of undergraduate science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education at Historically Black Colleges and Universities.
Lawson State mathematics instructor, Calvin Briggs, who serves as Project Director for STEP-UP in STEM and Secretary for AlaMATYC is enthusiastic about this opportunity for instructors to share in best practices in mathematics. “This is our second annual conference and we’re very happy to advance the association’s mission of promoting and increasing awareness of the role of two-year colleges in mathematics education.”
