State Wellness Day and Cancer Strout
OCTOBER 2008
- West Birmingham and Lawson State communities
alike were delighted by the Lawson State Community
College Wellness Day and Cancer Strut at the
Arthur Shores Fine Arts Building and throughout
the Birmingham West Campus on October 15, 2008.
The event was open to the public and offered
the chance to have free health screenings and
learn lots of healthy options for daily living.
Participants enjoyed the “Cancer Strut”
coordinated by Ms. Shelia Tyson and the Friends
of West End organization. The event was a collaborative
effort made by Lawson State, The UAB Minority
Health and Research Center, Racial and Ethical
Approaches to Community Health Across the U.S
(REACH U.S.) Be Fit Be Well and Friends of West
End.
The day began with cancer survivors
strutting around the Lawson State Birmingham
Campus in a parade accompanied by the Wenonah
High School drum line and the Lawson State Ambassadors.
The parade was led by Magical Moments Carriage
Company’s Clint Carlisle’s and his
Clydesdale horse and carriage. “The Cancer
Strut was unbelievable! I’ve never been
a part of anything like it,” says Amber
McCollum, Lawson State Ambassador. The name
“Cancer Strut” comes from the vision
of Shelia Tyson who says that cancer survivors
don’t walk – they strut.
The educational festivities continued
in the Arthur Shores Fine Arts building. Screenings
included visual, dental, blood pressure, diabetes,
sickle cell, AIDS and other sexually transmitted
diseases. There was also information on tobacco
and smoking prevention as well as Pilates “boot
camp” and nutrition tables offerings all
types of snacks and beverages that promote good
health. There were representatives from local
hospitals and medical institutions as well as
Lawson State’s School of Health Professions.
“I had the most fun playing Dance Dance
Revolution during Dr. Thomas’ boot camp,”
said Tina Nuspl a member of the community.
